Life in The Sunset

Returning to San Francisco at the turn of the year. We were here for New Years but by 11pm were all pretty much asleep. We were housesitting a friends place in the Mission District, which is becoming my favorite neighborhood once again. One could hear the usual revelry when midnight came.

For the next month we housesat, stayed with good friends and lived out of the trunk of a car - it was actually not as hard as I expected. We are now in a fine sublet out in the avenues in the Sunset. The weather this time of year is amazing. The skies are generally clear and the temperatures are always in the 50s and 60s. The lack of winter storms has made for a dry winter so far and the sunsets over the ocean are something to try to experience as often as possible. I like to get out around 5:30 pm and head out to a local park along a water reservoir between Ortega and Quintana. It has great views over the ocean and one can often see Point Reyes 50 miles up the coast. The park is a new one and is nothing more than walkways and benches.

The Sunset is a neighborhood of endless post World War II, two story homes. Most people seem to get around by car or perhaps on the bus as the blocks are large. I find it interesting that there is not more bicycle use here as the hills are not too bad. Hidden in this monotony are some interesting business districts with many restaurants. At Noriega and 22nd are many – Chinese, Thai, Korean. Five dollars seems to be the going rate for a plate of food. Looking forward to exploring these places.
