The Summer Report
By Paul Lyons
As the fires towards the South and West rage on, I return to the Pelican Café where the cool foggy breezes, migrating dolphins and ever-increasingly golden sunsets make for a new perspective. This weekend they close the Bay Bridge down and without slaves of any kind, plan to slide a massive piece of concrete and steel into place for a temporary detour so the Gods will be happy. People will still need to drive their chariots over in the usual fashion. All this effort is so that they can one day build a permanent pyramid bridge structure to hang wire over and make a really cool bridge that will not fall down when the Gods get angry and shake the mountains and sea. In recent years the trolls that hang out under the bridge have been sucking money out of all the drivers’ wallets. Modern business civility. The process of figuring out how to turn everyday things into subscriptions where the payments become hidden numbers wandering in some database.
Technology Update: No I do not really "have" Twitter. I created an account to see what all the fuss was about but it never really worked for me. Sorry. Instead, I will give you all of my “twits” of the summer in one post.
Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson mumble a lot but their presence is still something to appreciate.
Hetch-Hetchy in Yosemite is worth the detour especially in the early summer when the waterfalls are cascading down the mountainsides. Look out for bears.
Saw a guy earlier in the summer on a skateboard doing around 30 MPH flying down Duboce Street. He did not where a helmet and was going the speed of traffic. Cars were everywhere. I prayed he did not hit a stray pebble. I wonder if he is still with us.
Saw another guy riding next to me smoking a cigarette while cruising on his bike. He was wearing a helmet. Said he does everything on his bike.
If you‘re lucky you make friends that have dibs on company seats for SF Giants baseball tickets. This way the seats are real close to the action and you can see the ball.
Be careful on scheduling your dentist appointment with Doctor Grinditov. It is really a painful experience. Flossing regularly may keep your teeth longer but it will still hurt like hell.
Dr. Fukatome is away on sabbatical and may return with a new last name, as business has been slow lately. While she is gone, please contact Dr. Ben Dover for any health concerns.
There are two known timed-traffic lights in all of San Francisco: 19th Ave is the first. 14th Street going East starting at Dolores Street is the second. The San Francisco Traffic Control is doing a test of poorly timed lights on Valencia Street for the early morning commuters in an effort to keep people in a surly mood, covered with coffee stains when they arrive to work.
Twenty-five cents will get you four minutes on some meters in San Francisco. At times it is expensive to breathe here.
The Randall Museum is in a neighborhood called Corona Heights. The views are quite nice.
Check out the Mural on Dubose Street in the next post. It is very fun, quality public art. Too bad not more people see it.
